Jeff Tuchman — His Life and Work

I remember the first time I met Jeff. He’d come highly recommended, the rare filmmaker that had an unshakable moral compass and the patience and compassion to both teach and lead. I offered him a job. He turned me down. He didn’t want a job he explained, he wanted to make films.

Jeff Tuchman — Filmmaker and Friend

Over the next couple of months we talked and got to know each other. As he got to know the team at BNN he developed a theory. One day he told me “you don’t need a series producer, you need a camp counselor.” He was right of course. We had assembled a team of smart, hard working, driven young filmmakers. They had passion and ambition, they needed guidance. And so Jeff joined, but he ever took a job. Instead he responded to the calling of what over years became hundreds of filmmakers and stories needing to be told.

His instinct for how to tell a tale with images, sound, and text was flawless, and his ability to read a script and patch holes and strengthen narrative improved the work of every project he touched and every filmmaker he mentored.

His work speaks volumes about his passions and convictions, starting with Directing “The Man From Hope”, the Bill Clinton documentary portrait that galvanized the 1992 Democratic convention.

Here’s a list of the films he shepherded — see if you can see the same pattern in the titles that I did.

Tabloid! Inside the NY Post — Documentary (BNN / A&E)
A&E’s Investigative Reports takes a fast-paced look at one of New York City’s most prominent newspapers in Tabloid! Inside the New York Post. This documentary portrays the Post, warts and all, as a highly competitive news organization that runs the gamut from analytical business coverage to vicious celebrity mudslinging. “We’re a tabloid and that means we cover news through people and personalities, more than through abstract issues,” says a staff writer for the Post whose take-no-prisoners approach is embraced by her colleagues. We’re introduced to “Calamity” Sam Costanza, a crime photographer and adrenaline junkie on the prowl for fires, muggings, and particularly juicy murders; Richard Johnson, a gossip columnist with a vendetta against actor Alec Baldwin; and Managing Editor Marc Kalech, who proudly proclaims, “We attack people who need attacking.” Sure, it’s somewhat bizarre to witness such a huge collection of egomaniacs, hard-core journalists, and shallow columnists cranking out stories that have the barest resemblance to anything called news. However, Tabloid ties together a host of seemingly unrelated subplots and creates a compelling portrait of New York’s most controversial newspaper.

Firearms Freeway — Documentary (BNN / A&E)

The I-95 runs along the Eastern seaboard, from the tip of Florida up to the Canadian border. This strip of road is also known as “Firearms Freeway” due to the large amount of gun trafficking that takes place along the route, originating in Florida and profiting by it’s unusually lax gun regulations. This complex and divisive issue is evaluated thoroughly, identifying real-world problems and political issues that have affected current gun laws.

Shooting Stars: The Paparazzi — Documentary (BNN / A&E)
SHOOTING STARS goes inside the strange world of the photographers who work New York City hoping for a candid shot of today’s biggest names. It’s a strange life; the people they target as well as the public condemn them, even as the celebrities need the publicity and consumers eagerly snap up copies of the publications that showcase their work. Go “on the job” with a photographer working the Mercer Hotel lobby hoping for a shot of Leonardo DiCaprio, despite the fact that the last time he tried he was assaulted and his camera destroyed. And discover the distinctions that define the world of the paparazzi, where some get past the velvet rope for tame photos and some are locked out of the glamorous world yet produce the best, most valuable photos. It’s a gripping look inside a strange triangle — the stars need the publicity, the public love the photos, and the photographers need to eat.

Managing Your HMO — Documentary (BNN / A&E)
Real-life stories illustrate this important look at how people can take control of their healthcare. This documentary, part of the Investigative Reports series from A&E, takes a look inside the managed care HMO system of health insurance. Narrated by Investigative Reports host and producer Bill Kurtis, this video features in-depth talks with doctors who are forced by the HMO rules to monitor and heavily restrict the type of care they offer their patients. In many HMO plans, medical tests are limited, medicines are restricted, and certain doctors are ruled off-limits. Interviews with patients whose health has been affected by this lack of care bring to light the problem with managed care medicine in this country. Some HMO officials talk about their system and how it is normally supposed to work, contradicting the HMO doctors, who claim that all the insurance companies want is to make as much money as possible.

Exterminators — Documentary (BNN / A&E)

They’re part detective, part hit man, part scientist and part cowboy. They prowl the underbelly of the urban landscape in pursuit of their prey. EXTERMINATORS follows the people who help control New York City’s roaches and rats. Like hired guns, they take care of business and then disappear. They go where others dare not go and see what others fear to see. EXTERMINATORS introduces those on the front line: a husband and wife team who breed huge Madagascar roaches because you must understand your enemy; a man who prowls the subway tracks at night fighting to control the rat population; a Department of Health official who leads teams of exterminators through neglected buildings and abandoned lots. And meet a former exterminator who now writes poetry about the profession as well as those who don’t believe in pest control and think the problem is not with the pests but with the slovenly ways of humans.

Teen Gambling — Documentary (BNN / A&E)

This documentary, part of the A&E Investigative Reports series, explores the dark and depressing world of teenage gambling. With the rise of lotteries, and riverboat or land-based casinos, the percentage of people suffering from gambling addictions also increases. Sadly, these percentages also include underage teens, who cannot legally gamble but somehow manage to get hooked. Narrated by series producer and host Bill Kurtis, this episode features many actual stories about this teen phenomenon, including a group of 15-year-olds who play craps wherever they can. A 17-year-old tells how he missed his graduation ceremony in order to go bet at the local racetrack and another teenager speaks out about how his gambling problem forced him into criminal activity for money. Investigative Reports also talks with psychologists, gambling industry professionals, and parents of addicted teens about this growing trend in today’s young

Blood on the Tracks — Documentary (BNN / A&E) 29 April 29th, 2000

They are a familiar figure of Americana — the freight-hopping hobo. Between the Civil War and World War II, and estimated four million souls rode the rails. But now, true hobos are being replaced by criminals and gangs that have turned America’s railways into a haven of crime. MURDER ON THE TRACKS investigates the FRTA, a mysterious fraternity of rail riders who prey upon unsuspecting “civilians” who wander into their world. Fueling this is a new generation of rail riders, young kids who are unaware, or unconcerned, that they take their lives in their hands when they hop a freight train. We’ll hear the tragic stories of people who have sought romance and excitement, but ended up taking the last ride of their life. And veteran hobos with names like Guitar Whitey, Frog and Redbird Express help put the history of freight hopping into perspective. INVESTIGATIVE REPORTS takes to the rails to see what has become of the romanticized life of the hobo.
